Botetourt County has raised tax exemption levels for senior citizens and permanently disabled home owners.
Exemptions from real estate taxes may be granted on qualifying dwellings and land, not exceeding one acre, if the applicant's total gross income from all sources does not exceed $25,000 (the first $5,000 of income of a disabled owner is not included). The net combined financial worth has been increased from $60,000 to $75,000 excluding the value of the dwelling and the land, not exceeding one acre.
The limits were modified to give greater consideration to senior citizens and the permanently disabled.
The deadline for making application for these exemptions is July 15.

Celebrity Night raises $11,972
The Child Abuse Prevention Council raised $11,972 with its annual Celebrity Night ``Art With Heart.''
About 350 people attended the event at Hotel Roanoke. The art auctioned off was donated by local artists.
Antique autos needed for show
Roanoke's Festival in the Park is seeking entries for its antique auto show on June 3.
All entries must be in position by 11 a.m. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m.

Grants aid in beautifying valley
Valley Beautiful has awarded grants totaling $14,973 to Roanoke Valley organizations for beautification, environmental and educational projects.
The largest grant, $7,170, was given to Roanoke for hanging flower baskets in the city's central business district.
Valley Beautiful has supported the baskets through an annual grant since the project began in 1986. The grant is used to purchase the flowers; the city provides the labor to hang and care for the plants.
A similar arrangement was made with Vinton in 1993. The town's request this year for $1,875 for its hanging baskets was also granted.
Virginia Western Community College accepted $1,000 to further develop a community arboretum, a two-acre educational garden on the college campus in which more than 500 plant species are displayed. It is open to the public all year and has received support from Valley Beautiful each year since the arboretum's inception in 1989.
First-time grants were given to: Ebenezer A.M.E. Church to plant trees at the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Cove Road in Northwest Roanoke, $1,500; Old Southwest Neighborhood Association to plant trees along Franklin Road, $800; Salem to replace dead trees along Braeburn Drive, $503; Clearbrook Elementary School to establish an arboretum and outdoor environmental education area, $500; Greater Raleigh Court Civic League to plant trees in and around Raleigh Court Park, $500; Explore Park for planting at the park entrance on Rutrough Road in Vinton, $500; Fishburn Park Elementary School to mulch and plant trees as part of the school's Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations, $375; Grandin Court Elementary School to plant trees for a ``Be Kind to Earth'' project, $150; and Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization for plantings at the intersection of 10th Street and Loudon Avenue, $100.
Golfers sought for fund-raiser
The Roanoke chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and Cox Cable Roanoke are seeking entries for the JDF 12th annual fund-raising golf tournament, Aug. 7-8.
A charity cocktail party and auction will be held Aug. 6 at the Sheraton Inn Airport.
The organization has raised more than $1 million for research during the last 12 years.
The tournament will be a captain's choice format with a shotgun start. Participants may choose from four flights each at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. both days. With an additional entry fee, teams may play in more than one flight.
The fee is $67.50 per person or $270 for a team of four. Corporate teams will also be available for sponsorship.

Roanoke College summer session
Roanoke College's summer session begins June 5.
New students may call the admissions office, 375-2270; previously enrolled students may register by calling the registrar's office, 375-2210.
The first term ends June 30. The second summer term runs July 5-29.
Courses offered include: biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, criminal justice, economics, education, English, general education, history, interdisciplinary studies, language, mathematics, philosophy, physical education, physics, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, Spanish and statistics.
Event raises money for MDA
Children at First United Methodist Church Child Care Center in Salem hopped into action recently to raise $1,161.40 for ``Jerry's Kids.''
The children hopped for two minutes to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwest and Central Virginia.
All proceeds will be used to sponsor monthly clinics, summer camps and other patient services for local MDA families.
