DEBBIE BROGAN of Vinton is a "Girl Scout Instructor-of-Trainers," a national recognition by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Instructors-of-Trainers complete a three-stage certification process designed to ensure high-quality training for Girl Scout volunteers nationwide.

SANDRA TUCKER-MAXWELL, a local writer whose articles have been published in the Roanoke Times & World-News on the commentary page, recently had two short stories and a poem published in journals.

Tucker-Maxwell is a 1990 graduate of Hollins College and a substitute teacher for Roanoke County, Salem and North Cross schools.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF ROANOKE VALLEY INC. recently presented its annual awards given for 1994 work or activities. Winners included: The Evaluation Program of Roanoke Memorial Psychiatric Services for community service; Precision Fabrics Group, employer of the year; Connie Stevens of WDBJ-7 for "Health Check," media; Dr. William A. Fintel, medical; Dr. Michael Chiglinsky, mental health professional; Melissa Hays-Smith, public policy; Dr. William L. Ross, Robert A. Croxson Memorial Award; Linda Ferguson-Saunders and Carol Pruner, unsung heroes; Eli Lilly and Company, partnership; Ann Hutton and Ellen Weinman, distinguished service; Dr. Maureen Schnittger, committee chair of the year; Kay Kostura, volunteer of the year.

ARDELL STONE SCHOOL OF DANCING STUDENTS recently won several awards in the Dance Makers Inc. competition in Charlotte, N.C.

The intermediate performing group won first in jazz and second in tap. The junior performing group won second in jazz and third in tap.

The senior performing group won second for jazz and first for tap, while the junior and senior groups combined won first in the lyrical ballet category and second in jazz.

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES TINKER MOUNTAIN BOARD OF DIRECTORS has elected James S. Frantz Jr., president of Graham White Manufacturing Co., as its president.

Other officers are: Nicholas C. Conte, vice president; Richard Lynn, treasurer; Meg Cook, secretary; and Murray K. Coulter Jr., past president.

Also elected to the board are: James Arend, Susan K. Doyle, John Hall, and Paul W. Nordt III.

HAROLD V. CANNADAY II has been appointed head basketball coach for ECPI Computer Institute. Cannaday teaches at the Roanoke Academy for Mathematics and Science Magnet School.
