BISHOP TO HELP ST. FRANCIS CELEBRATE

Blacksburg's St. Francis' Anglican Church will celebrate its 15th anniversary Sunday at 10 a.m. The Rt. Rev. William deJ. Rutherfoord, Bishop of the Anglican Catholic Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic States, will administer confirmation and preach. The Rev. James I. Robertson, a deacon in the Anglican Church and chairman of the History Department at Virginia Tech, will speak on the history of St. Francis' Church.

A reception will follow the service. Visitors are invited to the service and reception, and nursery care will be available during the service. 552-1771.

Also celebrating an anniversary is the Antioch Baptist Church in Floyd County on May 29. Their one-year celebration will begin with Sunday School at 10 a.m. and worship at 11 a.m. There will be music by The Heavenly Visions and The Gospel Truth in the afternoon. SERVICES

"Thirteen Keys to an Effective Unitarian Universalist Fellowship" is the topic at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, Sunday at 10:30 a.m. 552-3785 or 552-8050.

Good Shepherd Baptist Church on Dunlap Drive in Christiansburg will have a revival Sunday through Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. Charles Fuller, host of radio's "God's Minute" and television's "God's Half Hour" will be guest evangelist. 382-0691.

The Christiansburg Church of Christ on South Franklin Street will have Bible classes for all ages Sunday at 10 a.m., services at 11 a.m., followed by a noon meal and evening worship at 7:30 p.m. Evening worships will also occur at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 382-3629.

Dale Shrader, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, will give his testimony at a Memorial Day service at Riverview Baptist Church May 28 at 10:30.

HAPPENINGS

First Wesleyan Church's Spring Fling will be today from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Giles Road. The event will feature coffee, doughnuts, hot dog, drinks, a flea market, craft items, and supervised games for children. Proceeds will go to mission projects at home and abroad. 552-1976.

The Dublin Church of God will have a yard sale, auction and car wash to benefit Youth World Mission Day, today at 9 a.m. The church is on East Main Street in Dublin.

In honor of the Rev. Marianne Pittman, who is retiring from her post at the Good Shepard Church of the Brethren, the church will have an open house and reception today from 2-5 p.m. at the church on Heather Drive in Blacksburg. 552-6795.

The 17th Annual Faith Promise Missions Convention continues at the First Church of God on 4th Avenue in Radford today and Sunday. Services begin at 7 p.m. each night with an Indian dinner at 5:30 p.m. tonight. 633-0389.

Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding. Donations will be used to go to a youth conference. 382-4318.

The Rockford United Methodist Church on Viscoe Road in Radford will accept aluminum cans for recycling between 11 a.m. and noon, Sunday.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford is having a food outreach on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the OCAW Union Hall in Fairlawn. Food boxes will be available first come, first served to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.

PEOPLE

Virginia Herz Currie received the Valiant Woman Award from the Church Women United in Blacksburg recently. The award is given every two years to an oustanding woman in church, community, and national or international developments.

Currie is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church who has served in a variety of positions, including chair of the Ecumenical Action Committee. She introduced the "Coins in a Jar" project to support the youth ministry, and under her leadership, the committee completed a survey of the facilities and conditions for women in the Montgomery County jail.

Currie has also been active in education, helping establish a speech and hearing clinic in Blacksburg schools, and she has been a long-time member of the American Association of University Women. Her civic work includes beautification projects for Blacksburg's road medians and participation in the "Bring Back the Lyric" project.

A mother of three, she has a degree in architecture and co-authored a treatise, with her husband, Blacksburg architect Leonard J. Currie, on Walter Gropius, a famous architect. The American Institute of Architects elected her to honorary membership in recognition of her charitable and community work.
