LYTTON GIVES AUBURN A LIFT

Jon Lytton threw a one-hitter and had an RBI double as fifth-seeded Auburn edged fourth-seeded Shawsville 2-1 on Friday in the play-in game of the Three Rivers District baseball tournament in Shawsville, advancing to Tuesday's semifinals. Lytton pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking five.

Shawsville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Auburn tied the score in the second when Bradley Hudgins singled, stole second and scored when Lytton doubled to right field.

The Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Tony Thompson walked, Hudgins reached on an error by the center fielder and Jeremy Akers singled to left to drive in Thompson.

Auburn will face Giles in a semifinal Tuesday at Radford University and Floyd County will play Radford.

Girls' soccer

Roanoke Valley District: Aimee Beightol scored two goals and Tiffanie Jackson had a goal and an assist as Cave Spring defeated Patrick Henry 3-2 to win the title. Carrie Moore scored both goals for Patrick Henry.

In Northwest Region play, the teams are paired with Gar-Field and C.D. Hylton, who met for the Cardinal District championship Friday night. Cave Spring will play host to the loser at 5 p.m. Monday. Patrick Henry will travel to Northern Virginia to face the winner.

Boys' soccer

Piedmont District: Wes Lewis scored off a corner kick in the second half as Martinsville beat Laurel Park 1-0 in Martinsville to capture the championship.

Laurel Park will meet the Seminole District runner-up Monday in Region III play.

On Wednesday, Martinsville will face the winner of Monday's Region III matchup between the Seminole District champion and the Blue Ridge District runner-up.

Roanoke Valley District: Andy Newton scored two goals and Cave Spring overcame an early deficit to rout Franklin County 6-1 and win the title at Cave Spring Junior High School.

The Eagles went up 1-0 on a goal by Josh Williams, but the Knights (13-1-1) countered 30 seconds later on one of Newton's goals. Cave Spring held a 3-1 lead at halftime and scored three goals in the last three minutes of the game. The Knights will meet Albemarle on Monday in the first round of the Northwest Region tournament.

New River District: Mark Becker had a goal and an assist to lead Blacksburg to a 5-1 victory over Christiansburg on the Indians' field. Five players scored for Blacksburg (14-0-1), which will play Thursday in a Region IV semifinal.

Becker's assist was his 19th of the season. The Indians led 5-0 before Christiansburg (9-7) got a goal from Tony Lisanti with eight minutes left in the game.
