NAMES & CHANGES

Highfill directs employee assistance

SUSAN HIGHFILL has been named director of Lewis-Gale Advantage Employee Assistance Program, a service of Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center in Salem.

Highfill most recently was director of the Grief and Loss Counseling Center, Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke.

She holds a master of science degree in clinical psychology and a master of science degree in counseling and student development, both from Radford University. Highfill is a licensed professional counselor and Fellow in the American Academy of Pain Management.

BANKING

PATSY FERGUSON has been promoted to assistant vice president of Southwest Virginia Savings Bank at the thrift 's main office in downtown Roanoke. She joined the company in 1974, was promoted to assistant branch manager of the Vinton branch in 1979 and was promoted to branch manager in 1986.

BUILDING SUPPLIES

DOUG CAMPBELL of Smith Mountain Lake has been appointed a Roanoke contractor sales representative for Taylor Brothers Inc. in Lynchburg. Campbell previously worked at Lowe's of Roanoke for 20 years.

COLLEGES

BYRON HICKS, retired chairman of the board of Dominion Bankshares Corp., was awarded the honorary doctor of laws degree from Roanoke College at its recent commencement. Hicks, a member of Roanoke College's class of 1938, was on the board of trustees from 1973 to 1988, when he was named trustee emeritus. He was awarded the Roanoke College Medal in 1979 for outstanding service to the school.

HOSPITALITY

KEN VENEY has been named tennis director for The Homestead resort in Hot Springs. Since 1993, Veney has been associated with The Woodlands, Peter Burwash International, a tennis management company based in Texas. Veney, who is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association, has been a tennis pro for Harbour Ridge in Palm City, Fla.; Doral Country Club in Miami; and The Peaks at Telluride, Colo. He played on the professional tour for five years and was the Australian National Team Champion in 1983.

The Roanoke Valley Association of Life Underwriters has elected officers and directors for 1995-1996: FRANK FOLEY, Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York, president; JOE GILKISON, The Travelers Cos., president elect; DON ASSAID, Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, first vice president; MICHAEL PIORO, The Prudential, second vice president; and DALE WILLIAMS, American United Life, secretary/treasurer. MANUFACTURING

JERRY ARNOLD has been promoted from marketing director to vice president of VFP Inc., Roanoke manufacturer of communications and equipment buildings. A 20-year veteran of the company, Arnold will continue to oversee marketing as well as assume management responsibilities for customer relations, engineering and research and development. Also at VFP Inc., SANDRA CANTRELL has been promoted to controller and WANDA HYLTON has been named manager of human resources.

TRANSPORTATION

Norfolk Southern Corp. stockholders have re-elected four directors to three-year terms: L.E. COLEMAN, chairman and chief executive officer of The Lubrizol Corp.; T. MARSHALL HAHN JR., honorary chairman of the board of Georgia Pacific Corp.; LANDON HILLIARD, a partner in Brown Brothers Harriman & Co.; and JANE MARGARET O'BRIEN, president of Hollins College.
