FIRE HITS NORFOLK PETROLEUM COMPANY

A four-alarm fire broke out Saturday night at a petroleum company, and police evacuated nearby residents.

``This is turning into a very, very big fire,'' Norfolk Police Department spokesman Larry Hill said.

Hill said the fire was at Fine Petroleum Co. Inc. in the St. Julian section of Norfolk, near the Chesapeake line. Hill said nearby residents were being evacuated.

Radio station WWDE reported the fire was out of control and quoted residents as saying columns of flames shot high into the air.

The radio station said firefighters from Norfolk and Chesapeake were battling to keep the fire from spreading to petroleum storage tanks. There also were reports of several small explosions.
