TOP-SEEDED TECH OUSTED BY TULANE

Freshman Jason Fitzgerald drove in two runs and stole home to lead Tulane to a 4-3 victory over Virginia Tech, eliminating the top-seeded Hokies from the Metro Conference baseball tournament Saturday.

With the score tied at 1, Fitzgerald hit an RBI single and later scored on a double steal to put the Green Wave ahead 3-1 in the second inning.

Fitzgerald added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh, scoring Brian Hughes and increasing the lead to 4-1.

Tech scored two runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Bo Durkac and Josh Herman. Tulane reliever Matt Ardoin then struck out Matt Reynolds to end the inning with two Hokies on base.

In the ninth, after Virginia Tech's Bryan King walked, Scott Bell came on in relief, striking out the next two batters. After Kevin Kurilla singled, Corey Snyder grounded out to end the game.

The Hokies finished the season 34-24.

Jared Robinson (4-3) gave up three unearned runs over 72/3 innings, striking out eight.

Tulane faced South Florida in the championship game Saturday night.
