RADFORD WINS REGIONAL TITLE IN SOCCER

Bayo Olorounto scored 25 minutes into the second half to break a tie and give Radford a 5-4 victory over George Wythe in the Region C boys' soccer championship game Saturday in Pearisburg.

Kirk Perrow scored three times for the Bobcats (9-5-2) in a first half that ended with the score 4-4. Wythe (5-9-2) had advanced with a 5-4 victory over Giles. Radford, which will be home for a Group A first-round game June 6, routed James River 7-0 in its opening game.

Girls' soccer

Blue Ridge Conference: Emily Cook scored two goals to help North Cross take a 3-0 lead, and the Raiders went on to a 4-1 victory over Roanoke Catholic in the championship game at the River's Edge complex.

Whitney Watson and Mary Jennings also scored for North Cross (7-1-1). Patty Mallan scored the goal for the Celtics, who advanced to the title game with a 4-0 victory over Stuart Hall behind Ann Stelzel's three goals.

North Cross routed Roanoke Valley Christian 8-0 in its semifinal as Watson scored three goals.

Roanoke Catholic's Dick Hinman was named coach of the year in the conference, and the all-tournament team consisted of: North Cross' Cook, Watson, Amber Jackson and Mary Jennings; Roanoke Catholic's Stelzel, Christy Hinman and Anna Berding; Roanoke Valley Christian's Megan Weaver and Rebecca Lochhart; and Stuart Hall's Laura Seraydarian and Emila Sutton.

Softball

Blue Ridge Conference: At North Cross, Lynchburg Christian defeated Holy Cross 13-8 in the championship game.

Holy Cross beat North Cross 15-3 in a semifinal. In the third-place game, North Cross defeated Roanoke Valley Christian 16-3. Blair Calvert was the winning pitcher and was 4-for-4 with two RBI, and Lisa Baetz was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBI.

The all-tournament team consisted of: infield - Jessica Davidson, RVC; Blair Calvert, North Cross; Katy Tucker, Holy Cross; Jenny Gerris, Holy Cross; Shannon Carroll, Tony Demonte and Felicia Gadonski, LCA; outfield - Amy Baber, RVC; Melissa Blythe, North Cross; Lauren Tucker, Holy Cross; Sara Sargent, LCA; Diane Norman, LCA.

Boys' lacrosse

Jefferson Cup: Jeremy Carter scored in overtime to give Patrick Henry a 5-4 upset victory over Roanoke Valley District champion Salem in the first round of the Jefferson Cup state tournament.

Max Masinter had a goal and an assist and Timmy Bowes and Taylor Jones added a goal each for the Patriots, who will visit Albemarle for a quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. John Humphries led Salem with two goals.

Girls' tennis

Blue Ridge Conference: On its home court, North Cross defeated Stuart Hall 6-3 to win the conference championship. Earlier, Stuart Hall blanked Lynchburg Christian 9-0 in the play-in match.

Kathryn Anthony, Summers Mattern and Elizabeth Melchionna of North Cross were named to the all-tournament team, along with Lynchburg Christian's Amy Parker and Hannah Shade and Stuart Hall's Jenny Dixon and Ashley Moss. Stuart Hall's Debby Casada was named the conference's coach of the year.
