UVA'S FLIPPEN WINS PLAYOFF FOR FINAL BERTH

Virginia's Jimmy Flippen won a playoff with Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp on Saturday for the final individual berth in the NCAA Division I golf championships, after the rivals tied for seventh at the NCAA Eastern Regional in New Haven, Conn.

Sharp shot the low round of the tournament, a 3-under-par 67, to move up from 55th after two rounds and finish with a 216 total. Flippen shot a 70, then beat Sharp on the second playoff hole. South Carolina's David Seawell (213) was the other individual qualifier.

Florida State's Christian Raynor won the individual title with a 2-over 212 total on the Yale University Golf Course. Clemson won the team title with an 857 total, and Virginia failed to advance after finishing at 889.

Ginny Johnson won two events in the 13- and 14-year-old division, setting meet records and qualifying for the junior nationals in both, at the RSA East Coast Invitational swim meet in Raleigh, N.C.

Johnson, competing for the FCAT Star City Aquatic team out of the LancerLot in Vinton, won the 400-meter freestyle and the 200 freestyle. Her time of 4 minutes, 29.06 seconds in the 400 set a Virginia long-course record. She was clocked at 2:09.06 in the 200.

Radford's Duane Filchner and Jim Abbott have been named to the All-Big South Conference baseball team, and first-year coach Lew Kent earned co-coach of the year honors along with Winthrop's Joe Hudek.

Filchner, a senior outfielder, is the school's all-time leading hitter and had a .389 career batting average. He had a school-record 81 hits this season. Abbott, a senior right-handed starter, finished the season with a 9-2 record (7-0 in the Big South) with a 3.14 earned run average. His nine wins is a school record.
