MULLINS NOTCHES WIN AT FCS

Jimmy Mullins edged out Bobby Radford to win the Kingery Brothers Excavating 100-lap Late Model stock car race on Saturday at Franklin County Speedway.

Mullins beat out 17 other cars in winning his first career late model race. He started sixth and worked his way past the rest of the field after Lowe Smith lost a wheel on lap 27. Radford, the leader at the time, spun to miss Smith and had to go to the end of the field.

Dudley Lawhorn led for 13 laps after the accident until Mullins passed him on lap 40. Mullins led the rest of the way with Radford coming through the field to finish second. Lawhorn came in third, followed by Dennis Gardner and Rodney Cundiff.

In the Street Stock division, Mike Elkins took the lead on lap 18 and cruised to victory. Mike Dudley, who led the first 17 laps, finished second with David Stout coming in third and Allen Buckner and Leon Dalton rounding out the top five.

The Mini Stock race was won by Gary Joyce, who qualified on the pole in a track-record time of 16:12. Joyce and Chris Martin swapped the lead twice before Joyce pulled ahead. Martin was second and Carlton Clark came in third.

J.R. Lester won the Pure Stock race after taking the lead from Mike Kingery on lap 4 and never looking back. Kingery finished second and Tommy Dooley came in third.

In the Rookie division, Rickey Ferguson won his sixth race of the season with Ray Turman second. Chris Hatchett won the truck race and Stephanie Yates won the women's race.

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke's Brandon LaCroix and Kemper Funkhouser of Harrisonburg came in first in the 14-15 age group at the Brandermill Four-Ball Classic held in Midlothian, Va.

LaCroix and Funkhouser shot a 68 on Saturday to win the tournament and the pair came in third overall in the tournament for ages 18-and-under.

Louise Akers from Christiansburg was awarded a gold medal in the women's 5K road race in the 70-74 age group at the U.S. National Senior Sports Classic V held in San Antonio.

The Senior Sports Classic is the nation's premier multi-sport athletic competition for athletes ages 55 and over. More than 8,500 senior athletes gathered last week in San Antonio to compete in 18 sports.

Ginny Johnson set her third meet record by winning the 100-meter freestyle in 1 minute, 1.25 seconds in the RSA East Coast Invitational swim meet in Raleigh, N.C.

Johnson, competing for the FCAT Star City Aquatic team out of the LancerLot in Vinton, also set meet records in winning the 400 and 200 freestyles Saturday.

Also Saturday night, Brian Marsh won the senior 200 butterfly in 2:13.79.

Ben Nielsen of Roanoke won the 15-16 juniors division at John S. Swartz Memorial cycling race Sunday in Richmond.

The victory qualified Nielsen, a freshman at Cave Spring Junior High School, for a regional camp June 24-25 in Glenspey, N.Y. The camp serves as a qualifier for the U.S. Junior Olympic team.

Nielsen, 15, races for Xaloy Team of the the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club.

The Roanoke Star under-14 green team came in second place at the Marietta Times Soccer Classic held in Marietta, Ohio.

The team, which won two games and lost two games, was led by Tom Ashton, who scored three goals, and Phuong Duong, who added two. Joel Sadler, Tyler Godsey, and Chris Bryant each had a goal. One of the team's losses was a 1-0 decision to the eventual champion, a team from Pittsburgh.
