ALL-CLEAR DECLARED AFTER NORFOLK FIRE

A fire that destroyed a chemical warehouse at a Superfund cleanup site apparently did not hurt nearby air or water quality, but officials were still checking the property Sunday for contamination.

People who live near the Fine Petroleum Co. Inc., where an oval-shaped metal storage building was gutted Saturday evening, were told Sunday it was safe to open windows and allow their children to play outside, said Lane Poole, a supervisor for the Norfolk Department of Emergency Services.

Meantime, runoff from the site was prevented from reaching storm sewers that might lead to the Lafayette River. ``To our knowledge, there was no contamination of surface water, because they quickly contained any runoff,'' said Janet Clements of the state Office of Emergency Services.
