TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Susan Julian believes the best way for children to learn is from each other.

That's why Julian keeps her pupils at Roanoke's Highland Park Learning Center and Magnet school involved in a number of projects throughout the year.

Among the activities her fifth-graders have participated in this year are a social studies fair, an invention convention, an American Indian fair and numerous plays performed for the school. "Sharing what they've learned can really make a difference," Julian said. "I ask my kids what they like best so I can repeat it the following year, but it's hard for them to choose."

While Julian says she strives to prepare her pupils for the future, she doesn't want them to miss out on the joys of today. "I want them to enjoy getting there," she said.

Julian says getting her pupils to believe in themselves is her top priority. "Mrs. Julian cares about us and our success," said her nominator. "She understands us and helps us with our needs."

Married and the mother of three, Julian enjoys tennis, volleyball and arts and crafts.
