The 43-year-old road deputy said Monday he'll run for the county's top law enforcement post. That makes five candidates so far who plan to run for sheriff.
"I have all intentions of running," said Reid, 43. He'll make a formal announcement of his independent candidacy within the next two weeks, he said.
If elected, Reid said he would establish a strict policy-and-procedures manual. He also would try to get funding for extra deputies and build up morale within the ranks with awards recognizing good service.
A Marine Corps veteran, Reid has worked for the sheriff's office for a total of 12 years. He was an investigator during the mid-1980s. He quit the sheriff's office for more than two years to work for a trucking company in Roanoke and returned in 1989 as a road deputy.
He'll be joined on the campaign trail by: Lt. Vernon Goode and Sgt. Dave Cooper, fellow Bedford deputies; Doug Maynard, an investigator in the Bedford and Roanoke public defender's offices; and Mike Brown, an international security consultant. Brown is running as a Republican; the rest are independents.
