ROCKBRIDGE TOPS VIKINGS IN BASEBALL

Junior shortstop Greg Stubblefield was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBI to help power Rockbridge County past Northside 11-3 on Monday in the first round of the Blue Ridge District baseball tournament.

Gary Tyree (5-4-1) pitched a two-hitter for the Wildcats (9-9), who advance to play William Byrd in a semifinal Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Terriers' field.

In the other game, Salem beat Lord Botetourt 2-0 on Kevin Feazell's two-hit, 10-strikeout effort. Salem meets Alleghany at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Byrd in the other semifinal.

The Spartans scored one run when Charlie Hammersley came home from third on an attempted double steal with men on first and third. Seth Moore singled to drive in the other run.

The championship game also will be played Wednesday, at 4 p.m. at Byrd.

PIEDMONT DISTRICT: Fieldale-Collinsville defeated Bassett 3-1 in the tournament as Brian Alley held the Bengals to four hits while striking out 12.

The Cavaliers (16-2) scored one run on a bases-loaded walk, another on a passed ball with runners on second and third and the final run on Brent Shively's infield hit that brought in Mancino Craighead.

Semifinals are Wednesday at Southside Park in Martinsville, starting at 5 p.m., and the championship game is Friday.

Softball

SEMINOLE DISTRICT: Liberty scored four runs in the third inning and held off a Jefferson Forest rally to defeat the Cavaliers 5-4 in the first round.

Adriane Biggio and Sue Cowlbeck each had a double and two RBI during the third inning as the Minutemen took a 5-2 lead. Jefferson Forest rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Liberty held off the Cavaliers.

Carla Goff struck out five and gave up five hits in picking up the victory. The Minutemen will face Rustburg at 5 p.m. Wednesday in a second-round game.

Boys' tennis

REGION C: In Radford, Glenvar's Nick Varney moved a step closer to reaching the Group A tournament for the fourth consecutive year, beating Giles' Russell Bowling 6-0, 6-3 in a semifinal.

In the other semifinal, Josh Robinson of John Battle beat Narrows' Jay Webb 6-2, 6-3 to move into the final opposite Varney, who won two state titles before finishing third last year.

In the doubles semifinals, Varney teamed with Josh Williamson to beat Bowling and Jonathan St. Ledger of Giles 6-1, 6-0 and Thomas Senter and Jeremy Epling of Lebanon defeated Webb and Jason Spangler of Narrows 6-3, 6-2.

In team play, three-time defending Group A champion Glenvar beat Lebanon 8-1, and Radford edged Galax 5-4. Finals will be played today.

REGION III: In Amherst, two-time defending champion Salem ripped Brookville 8-1 in a first-round team match, while Fieldale-Collinsville beat Jefferson Forest 5-4 when Russell Fulcher and Barry Scott defeated Ben Hansen and Mark Monteleagre 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at No.3 doubles.

Salem breezed to its victory despite the ejection of No.1 singles player Jeff Henley, who was tossed in the second set of his match against Todd Williams. Henley was assessed two code violations for slamming a ball and throwing his racquet and is ineligible for today's team finals.

Henley advanced in the individual singles competition with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Williams and will meet Stuart Cox of Fieldale-Collinsville for the championship at 1 p.m. today at Sweet Briar College.

In doubles competition, Henley and partner Will Wimmer will face meet the Jefferson Forest team of Biggs Cannon and Graham Stallard at 3 p.m. Henley and Wimmer defeated the Brookville team of Williams and Spencer Baird 7-5, 6-3, and Cannon and Stallard beat Cox and Amit Patel of Fieldale-Collinsville 6-1, 7-6.

NORTHWEST REGION: Derrick Wafford and David Perrill of host Woodbridge defeated Andrew Thomas and Hunter Carson of Patrick Henry 6-3, 6-0 in a doubles semifinal. Patrick Henry will face E.C. Glass in a semifinal at 11 a.m. today.

REGION IV: In Bristol, Chad Jones and Hank Rainero defeated Robert Gibb and David Reynolds 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No.1 doubles to help Virginia-Bristol win the championship with a 5-4 victory over Blacksburg, ending a two-year reign by the Indians.

In singles, Gibb defeated Briggs Shreve of Gate City 6-4, 6-4 for the title. In the doubles final, Jones and Rainero defeated Gibb and Jeff Varner 7-5, 6-3.

Girls' tennis

REGION III: Salem players dominated singles and doubles play and the Spartans advanced to the team final at the Region III tournament in Martinsville.

The Spartans overpowered Martinsville 8-1 in a team semifinal behind victories by Jill Archer and Betsy Hall in singles and doubles. The lone triumph for the Bulldogs was Dale Nease's 6-2, 6-3 decision over Andrea Howdyshell at No.4 singles. Jefferson Forest ousted Fieldale-Collinsville 9-0 in the other semifinal.

Archer then defeated Martinsville's Kristy Westmoreland for the second time Monday, 6-4, 6-2, in an individual singles semifinal. She advances to meet Jefferson Forest's Katie Brown, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Fieldale-Collinsville's Jennifer Witt.

In individual doubles, Archer and Hall breezed past Westmoreland and Kristin Page-Medone of Martinsville 6-2, 6-1. The Salem duo will meet Jefferson Forest's Brown and Carey Schneeweiss, who defeated Witt and Ashley Pace of Fieldale-Collinsville 6-1, 6-1.

The team final is today at 9 a.m., with the singles final at 1 p.m. and the doubles final at 3 p.m.

Boys' soccer

NORTHWEST REGION: At Cave Spring Junior High School, Albemarle scored two quick goals to start the second half and went on to a 2-1 victory over Cave Spring in the first round.

Cameron Stoddart and Kris Mason scored for the Patriots (10-4) before Cave Spring goalie Justin Brittle shifted the momentum by stopping a penalty kick. The Knights (13-2-1) sliced Albemarle's lead on a goal by Don O'Hair. Cave Spring then pressed the last 10 minutes, but could not tie the score.

In another Northwest Region game, host E.C. Glass buried Franklin County 6-0 as the Hilltoppers (11-3-2) outshot the Eagles 38-6. Marcus Beck led Glass with two goals.

REGION III: Salem downed Jefferson Forest 3-1 as Brian Jones, Jason Woolwine and Brady Warr scored goals in the first round at Northside.

In the other first-round game, Brookville blanked Laurel Park 2-0 as David Henderson and Juan Sanchez-Fernandez scored goals.

Girls' soccer

NORTHWEST REGION: Gar-Field ruined Cave Spring's perfect season, handing the Knights a 5-2 loss at Cave Spring Junior High School.

Missy Wycinski was the dominant player for Gar-Field (12-3-1), scoring two goals and controlling the action. Stephanie Jansen also scored twice for the Indians.

The Knights (13-1) got goals from Ann Schleupner and Tiffanie Jackson, but were outshot 33-19.

In another first-round game, host C.D. Hylton mauled Patrick Henry 11-1. Carrie Cunningham scored three goals and had two assists for the Bulldogs (15-1-1). Carrie Moore scored the only goal for the Patriots.
