MUSIC COMPETITION

Cash prizes totaling $4,000 will be awarded for bluegrass and old-time instruments and singing.

Contestants should register in advance by mail. Competition will be held on both nights of the event, beginning at 7 p.m.

Two- or one-day advance tickets may be purchased. Camping is available for contestants and spectators. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult.

Wine auction

Mill Mountain Theatre will host the first annual ``Cork & Curtain,'' a wine auction and gala, Sept. 8.

The benefit for the theater will be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Roanoke. An informal wine tasting with hors d'oeuvres will be followed by a sit-down dinner and live auction.

``Festive'' attire is suggested.

The auction will include wines and other ``fine living'' items, such as trips and jewelry.

Tickets are $60 per person, which includes a $15 credit toward an auction bid. Tables of 10 may be reserved for $1,000.

Civil War event

The Fourth Annual Civil War Re-enactment will be held July 29-30 at Green Hill Park, Salem.

More than 500 re-enactors are expected to participate in the July 29 Battle of South Salem and the Southern Charge on July 30.

Civil War-era music and dance, women's fashions and children's games will be featured along with the military events.

The event is sponsored by Roanoke County Parks & Recreation. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 ages six to 17 and under 5 is free.
