FLOYD DEMOCRATS PICK 3 CANDIDATES

Floyd County Democrats easily chose three uncontested candidates last week to represent them in local fall elections.

Elmer Edward Underwood, the only Democratic candidate for sheriff, spoke at the caucus, held Saturday afternoon in the cafeteria of Floyd Elementary school. Underwood will face Republican Donnie Pratt in November. The winner will replace retiring Republican Tom Higgins.

Underwood is a lifelong resident of Floyd County. He is a carpenter and also has worked as a farmer.

He says the sheriff's office must give more attention to illegal drugs.

The sole Democratic candidates for the Board of Supervisors are both incumbents.

Jerry Boothe will face Republican Kirby Harris in the C-91 Courthouse District.

Boothe, 35, is a carpenter finishing his first four-year term as supervisor. He will focus on improving education and attracting business and industry to the county.

Edsel Duncan, 73, will face Republican Gary Gillespie in the Indian Valley District. Duncan, a retiree from Mohawk Rubber, is finishing his first term on the board. His main priorities are employment, better schools and roads.

"It was a good turn out, about 50 fifty people showed up," said Nolen Goad, Democratic Party Chairman.
