MONTGOMERY COUNTY WOMAN INJURED IN MORNING WRECK ON PLUM CREEK

A Montgomery County woman was seriously injured in a Tuesday morning two-car crash in Plum Creek, but was in fair condition several hours later.

Elizabeth Craighead Williams, 45, of Rock Road collided with another car at 11:10 a.m. when she pulled out of the Sandstone Market parking lot and into the path of a car traveling on U.S. 11, State Trooper Eddie Bowen said.

Williams' car came to rest across the highway against a guardrail. Members of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad and the Christiansburg Fire Department spent about 40 minutes freeing her from the car.

She was taken to Radford Community Hospital with multiple injuries, including a compound fracture of the right leg and internal injuries, Bowen said.

The driver of the other car, William E. Harvey, had been traveling toward Radford. His car spun around in the middle of the road and came to a rest facing the opposite direction.

Harvey, 44, of Block Lane, Christiansburg, was treated at the scene for head injuries.

Harvey's injuries were likely less serious because he was wearing a seat belt while Williams was not, Bowen said.

The accident is a poignant reminder during local "Buckle Up America Week' observances.

"She was a lucky woman," Bowen said.

An investigation is continuing.
