2 SHOT AT WHITE HOUSE

Three days after White House security was tightened to historic levels, an armed man jumped over a gate at the White House late Tuesday and was shot by a Secret Service officer. A Secret Service officer also was shot, police said.

Secret Service spokesman Dave Adams identified the suspect as Leland William Modjeski of Falls Church, Va. The wounded officer, whose name was not released, and Modjeski were in a hospital with non-lethal injuries, Adams said.

President Clinton and his family, who were inside at the time, were not in danger, Adams said

Adams said the suspect climbed a fence on the east side of the White House. At some point, the suspect fired at a uniformed Secret Service officer, hitting him in the arm. Police believe the suspect was shot by the wounded officer.

Saying that details were sketchy almost two hours after the shooting, Adams said it was unclear who fired first or how many rounds were fired.

Adams said the incident took place about 10:45 p.m. He did not know what type of gun the suspect used.

A spokeswoman at George Washington University Hospital, seven blocks from the White House, said a uniformed Secret Service officer and a civilian were brought to the hospital shortly after 11 p.m.

The officer had been shot in his arm, while the other man was wounded in his upper body, said the spokeswoman, Merle Goldberg. Both were in stable condition and it was not immediately known whether either would need surgery, she said.

The first paramedic on the scene, Thomas Crabb, said both men had been shot in the left arm.

Under heavy guard, Modjeski, 37, was brought into the hospital in handcuffs to be treated.

The shooting occurred just after Clinton had returned to the executive mansion after addressing Democratic congressional campaign committees.
