Buckle up and be safe|

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Christiansburg Fire Department and the Radford Police Department are celebrating Buckle American Weekthis week by tying red, white and blue striped ribbons on their vehicle antennas. The ribbons are to remind people to buckle up and observe driving rules on their trips.

Buckle Up America! Week is part of the national Safe and Sober Campaign, a two-year program designed to increase safety-belt use to 75 percent and reduce alcohol-related fatalities to 43 percent by 1997.

Upcoming WTOB programs

BLACKSBURG - WTOB Channel 2, public and government access television station, will broadcast "An Introduction to Mass Gatherings Ordinance 1013" and how town officials and Virginia Tech representatives and students feel about it on May 30 at 7 p.m.

On May 31 at 7 p.m. "Krafty Kids" will air. It's an arts and crafts series for children and parents. "The Briefcase Incident," an action picture about a group of mobsters, follows at 7:30 p.m.

Dog show on June 3

BLACKSBURG - Close to 600 dogs are registered to participate in the New River Valley Kennel Club Dog Show and Obedience Trial on June 3 at Lane Stadium between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The AKC licensed events are co-sponsored by the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Vendor booths with a variety of specialty items will be set up along with snack and food concessions.

Phillip Pickett, a veterinary ophthalmologist with the veterinary college, will conduct an eye clinic for registered breeding stock from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Owners should bring their dog's AKC registration papers and $15 for the examination fee.

AIDS education program

PULASKI - An educational program entitled "Learning About AIDS" will be sponsored by the Pulaski County Extension Office on May 31. Katrina Watson, public health, epidemiologist, will present the program. The program is open to the public.

The program will be at 10 a.m. in the Pulaski County Administration Building, Extension Education room. For more information, call 980-7761.

Flea market hosts 700

DUBLIN - The Dublin Lions Club, Inc., sponsors the Pulaski County Flea Market June 3-4. The event will be at the New River Valley Fairgrounds, Virginia 100.

More than 700 crafts and antique booths will be set up. Set-up space cost is $10 for outside, $15 inside. Admission is $1 and children under 6 are admitted free.

NRCC receives grant

DUBLIN - The Student Support Services program at New River Community College has received $230,996 grant to continue its programming for the coming academic year. The grant was approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Student Support Services is designed to help NRCC students who are first generation students, come from low income families or are physically disabled to start, continue with, or return to college. The program assists these students to overcome the effects of a poor educational background or other cultural or physical barriers to their success in college.

Special classes, tutoring, counseling, guidance, cultural enrichment activities, field trips and classroom support are some of the classes and programs offered to students. Cheryl Lewis is program coordinator.
