BOWE, Helen Frances Houff, 73, of Salem, died Monday, May 22, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darden Lynwood Bowe, and is survived by her daughter, Susan B. Hodges; son, Danny D. BRANSCOME, Ella Mae, 89, of Hillsville, Va., passed away Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at Blue Ridge Highlands Nursing Home, Galax, Va. She was born June 17, 1905, in Carroll County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Joseph V. Horton and Laura Alice Quesenberry Horton. She is survived by one brother, Guy Horton, Hillsville; one sister, Ruthie Horton Diviak, Phildelphia, Penn.; and a special friend, Lois Alderman, Galax. Funeral services 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25,1995, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, Va. with the Arvin Quesenberry officiating. Interment will follow int he Branscome Cemetery. CAMPBELL, Dove Cyphers, 84, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at her residence. She was the widow of Edward Matthew Campbell and also a former employee of American Viscose. Surviving are two sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Stanley, Roanoke, and Jean and R.C. Palmer, Vinton; also several nieces and nephews. DAVIS, Rosa Wimmer, of Salem, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Monday, May 22, 1995. She is survived by a daughter, Mildred D. Stewart; grandsons, Larry E. FOIL, Howard Henry, 83, of Hillsville, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 1995 at Waddell Nursing Home. He was born March 22, 1912 in Foryth County, N.C., the son of the late Charlie and Alice Foil. He was an Inn Keeper for Holiday Inn for 36 years. Due to his love for fishing, he was known as the Laurel Fork Fisherman. He was a life member of the DAV. He is surv ived by his wife, Helen Foil, of the home; one son, Michael Jerry Foil, Washington, N.C.; one daughter, Betsy Foil, Austin, Texas; two stepchildren, Bob Hart, El Paso, Texas, Jim Hart, Rocky Mount, N.C.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 1995, at Buffalo Mountain Church, with the Rev. Gary Marshall, the Rev. Brian Childress and the Rev. Harold Fenstermaker officiating. FRANKLIN, Earnest Edward, 61, of Route 3, Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995. He was retired from Guyer-Roberts Manufacturing Company and was a member of Doe Run Christian Church, and was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Franklin and a brother, Jesse Glenn Franklin. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Austin Franklin; one son and his fiancee, Roger Edward Franklin and Lynn Seay, Rocky Mount; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia F. and Charles Nunley, Roanke; his mother Louella Franklin, Rocky Mount; two grandchildren, Jeremy Marshall Nunley, Roger E. Franklin Jr.; one great-grandaughter, Jessica Nicole Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Eddie Peters officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. GATZKE, Evelyn Mary, 70, of Buena Vista, died Monday, May 22, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Racine, Wisconsin on January 4, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Mary Linsmeir Simmet. After 18 years service, she was a retired Clerk of the Buena Vista School Board. She was a member and Church Lay Minister of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Buena Vista Women's Club, the American Cancer Society, the HELP Line; a volunteer at Stonewall Jackson Hospital and a volunteer tutor at Kling Elementary School. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Henry Gatzke, Buena V ista; a daughter, Carol G. Williams, Liverty, W. Va.; three sons, Donald F. Gatzke, New Orleans, La., Steven L. Gatzke, Lynchburg and Randal J. Gatzke, Roanoke; six grandchildren, Emily, Alayne, Glenn, Katelyn, Keith and Mark; two brothers, William Simmet, St. Petersburg, Fla and John S. Simmet, St. Paul, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 26, 1995, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father J. Morton Biber officiating. HANCOCK, Amer Wright, 89, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Tyler Hancock Sr., a son, Vernon Tyler Hancock Jr., two grandsons, and a granddaughter. Mrs. Hancock was a member of First Wesleyan Church and a former member of Central Baptist Church, Starkey. HODGES, Catherine Wray, 74, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995 in the local hospital. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Hubert D. Hodges, Rocky Mount; two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Lee Eames, Rocky Mount, Gladys and Jim Taylor, Bassett; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dan and Jean Hodges, Hardy, Harold Hodges, Rocky Mount; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Julia and Cecil Wray, Rocky Mount, Frances and Alfred Law, Rocky Mount; one brother and sister-in-law, J. HURD, John Franklin Jr., 66, of 1406 Highland Circle, Blacksburg, formerly of Welch West Virginia, died Monday, May 22

, 1995, at his home. Born at Welch West Virginia, he was the son of Virginia Doss Hurd of Richmond, Va., and the late John F. Hurd Sr. He was a graduate of Welch High School and received his Bachelors Degree in Business from the University of Richmond. He had served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. For many years, Mr. Hurd was as sociated with the family business in Welch, operating the Hurd Motor Company. He had served as the General Manager of Hall Chevrolet in Welch for 12 years, retiring in July of 1992. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Welch, a member of the AF & AM Masonic Lodge 127, Welch, and the Beni Kedim Temple in Charleston. He was also active with the Welch Kiwanis Club. Mr. Hurd moved to Blacksburg, Va. in 1994. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Shrewsbury Hurd of Blacksburg; one son, Mr. John Martin Hurd of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Hurd Pauley of Columbia, S.C.; one granddaughter, Ms. Jennifer Christine Pauley; one sister, Mrs. James (Ann) Wilson of Richmond, Va. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with the Rev. Jack Barker officiating. JONES, Hazel Virginia, 81, of Christiansburg, passed away early Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at her home. The widow of the late Alvie Henry Jones, she is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma M. and Kelly Shelor, Bonnie Lou and Buford D. Linkous all of Blacksburg, Barbara Jean Jones, Maggie Alene Jones and Velma Diana Jones all of Christiansburg; one sister, Ruth Jones, Blacksburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends. MARTIN, Mary Austin, 98, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Martin and a son, Bernard Martin. She was a life time member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. RUDY, Mahlon Kyle Sr., 59 of Richmond, born in Wythe County, Va., died May 22, 1995. He was a State Executive Director, Virginia Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service until his retirement in 1993. H eas a graduate of V.P.I. where he received his BS Degree in Agricultural Education in 1957. He was a member of Huguenot United Methodist Church where he had taught a young adult Sunday School Class for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gassaway Rudy; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan K. Rudy, Hillsville, Va., Rebecca Rudy and Carl Gene Johnston, Rhoadesville, Va.; son, Mahlon Kyle Rudy, Jr., New York City; father, William Ralph Rudy; sister, Martha Rudy Neese, both of Max Meadows, Va.; and three grandchildren, Barbara Jean Davis, Rudy McClinton Boroughs and Ashley Lorene Weaver. WALDROP, Margaret Carper, 77, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995 at her home. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Mary Baldwin College. Mrs. Waldrop was a past president of the Roanoke Junior League, a life-long member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Roanoke Assembly and an active community volunteer.
