But a grand jury will consider three other charges against Calvin Tracy Greene, who is accused of a string of bank robberies in February and March.
Molly Jackson, teller supervisor at NationsBank on Melrose Avenue Northwest, testified Wednesday about a robbery there on Feb. 2. She said she had just finished with a customer when a man wearing a maroon ski mask, tan parka and gloves ran in the back door with a pillowcase and demanded she fill it with money.
Jackson said she put approximately $5,000 into the pillowcase. The robber held his hand in his pocket giving the impression that he had a gun, but she never actually saw a weapon, she said.
Jackson couldn't identify Greene as the robber because the robber wore a mask, but she said Greene was about the same height.
Angelina White, a teller at the First Union National Bank branch on McClanahan Street Southwest, which was robbed Feb. 24, and Angela Price, a teller at the VARO Federal Credit Union on Melrose Avenue, which was robbed March 9, also testified that a man wearing a dark-colored ski mask came in with a pillowcase and demanded money.
White said she wasn't sure how much money was stolen, but Price said the robber got away with about $2,300. Both women said the robber had a black handgun and that Greene was about the same height as the robber.
The last robbery occurred March 27 at a drive-through window at the First Union branch at Williamson Road and Pioneer Avenue. Tiffany Paige, a former employee who was working in the drive-through, which is separate from branch building, said she was reading a magazine when she looked up and saw a man wearing a red ski mask.
"He was standing there with a gun pointed towards me, and I was screaming, `Please don't hurt me or my baby,' because I was pregnant at the time. I just put the money in the drawer, and he got it out. I got on the floor and called the main bank," she said.
Paige said the robber got away with about $2,500.
Sgt. Stan Smith of the Roanoke Police Department said Greene was apprehended shortly after the March 27 First Union robbery. A Roanoke County rescue volunteer who worked across the street at C&M Trading Cards heard Paige scream and began chasing Greene.
Smith said Greene was looking behind him to see who was chasing him and ran right into Smith.
Smith testified that Greene admitted the March 27 robbery but denied the others.
However, the judge dropped a charge against Greene of entering a bank to commit larceny in connection with the First Union holdup because it occurred outside the bank.
