Pat Paye, son of longtime William Fleming coach Burrall Paye, will be named boys' basketball coach at William Campbell High School tonight.
A source, who requested anonymity, said Pat Paye will be recommended to the Campbell County school board tonight. He is expected to be approved as the successor to longtime coach Rick Purcell, who is taking over as athletic director at the Naruna school.
This will be Paye's first job as a head coach at the varsity level. However, he comes from a strong family tree of coaches influenced by his father.
The elder Paye, who is approaching the 500th victory of his career, has sent assistants Barry Hamler (Booker T. Washington), Andy Gray (Gar-Field) and Dave Bentley (Wise) to head-coaching jobs at Virginia high schools. Hamler recently left Booker T. Washington to become head coach at Elizabeth City (N.C.) State.
While Pat Paye didn't coach under his father, he played for him at William Fleming before transfering to William Byrd, then went on to a college career at Ferrum and Emory & Henry.
Pat Paye, who would not comment on the William Campbell job except to say he is a candidate for the position, also was an assistant at Emory & Henry under another well-known coach, Bob Johnson. He was an assistant at Virginia High School in Bristol, then moved to William Byrd, where he has spent the past three seasons as an assistant to Paul Barnard.
``I'd hate to see him go if he gets the job, but it's a good situation for him,'' Barnard said. ``When you get good people, you know you're going to lose them.''
Paye also was an applicant for the Alleghany opening last year and was a finalist at Rustburg, which will name a coach from out of state.
