The derailment occurred on a downhill curve at 5:45 a.m. and involved 22 coal cars, each carrying 100 tons of coal bound from Andover in Wise County to a Duke Power generating station near Charlotte, N.C., according to NS spokesman Bob Auman.
The train was traveling around 23 mph, Auman said.
The accident tore up 800 feet of track, which should be back in operation by noon today.
Damage to the track was estimated at $25,000; to train equipment, $255,000; and in lost coal, $64,000, Auman said.
