SALEM, BYRD ADVANCE IN SOCCER

Salem nipped Martinsville 3-2 in overtime and William Byrd downed Brookville 3-1 on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Region III boys' soccer tournament at Northside High School.

The Blue Ridge District rivals will meet at 4 p.m. Friday for the championship.

Eric Millard's overtime goal lifted the Spartans (7-4-2) over Martinsville (9-7).

Millard and Cris Barga scored Salem's goals in regulation. Mike Martin and Wes Lewis collected Martinsville's goals.

In the other semifinal, the Terriers (11-2) got goals from Joe Cockfield, Eric Martin and Chris Sowers in beating Brookville (7-7-2).

Baseball

PIEDMONT DISTRICT: Fieldale-Collinsville got a complete-game pitching performance from Phillip Spencer, and Brent Shively went 3-for-4 as the Cavaliers advanced to the title game with a 9-3 victory over Chatham.

Spencer went seven innings, gave up one earned run and struck out eight. Fieldale-Collinsville (19-2), the regular-season champion, will face Magna Vista in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday. Magna Vista advanced with a 7-4 victory over Martinsville. Carl Morton was 2-for-3 to lead Magna Vista.

Softball

ROANOKE VALLEY DISTRICT: Cave Spring won its district-record fourth consecutive tournament crown, thrashing visiting Franklin County 12-1 in the championship game.

The Knights (17-3), who didn't lose an RVD game during the regular season, scored seven runs in the sixth inning to knock out the Eagles. Sara Oglivie's solo home run was a big hit in an uprising that included a triple, two doubles and two singles.

The Knights advanced to the final earlier in the day, ripping William Fleming 15-0 on a combined four-hit shutout by Princess Kemp and Shannon Slovensky.

Franklin County moved to the final by downing Patrick Henry 7-5 in the first round. Jenny Chitwood led the Eagles, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Cave Spring advances to the Northwest Region tournament. The Knights play the Western District runner-up at 4 p.m. Monday.

NEW RIVER DISTRICT: In Hillsville, Carroll County outlasted Christiansburg 19-17 in the tournament championship game despite 17 walks by its pitching staff.

The Cavaliers (8-9) never lost the lead, but got a scare in the seventh before reliever Bridget Edwards came on and retired the final two Blue Demons with the bases loaded.

Tasha Huffman was 3-for-3, including a three-run homer, for Christiansburg (3-14).

Both teams advance to the Region IV tournament, which starts Saturday at Richlands. Christiansburg faces Gate City, the Southwest District champion, at 10 a.m. Carroll County meets Virginia High School of Bristol, the Highlands District champion, at noon.

SEMINOLE DISTRICT: In Rustburg, two-time defending Group AA champion Rustburg got a complete-game pitching performance from Katie Phillips and Lisa Jones drove in two runs as the Red Devils (19-1) beat Liberty 4-1 and advanced to Friday's championship game against Amherst County.

Liberty (13-7) got its only run when Lisa Carr singled to drive in Chrystal Daniels.

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT: In Floyd, unbeaten Floyd County scored 16 runs in the first inning and rolled to a 34-4 rout of Auburn in the tournament championship game.

The Buffaloes (19-0) pounded out 34 hits. Sophomore Kim Sutphin was 6-for-6 and scored five runs.

Floyd County will play host to the Hogoheegee District runner-up in Tuesday's Region C semifinal round. Auburn also advanced to the region semifinals. The Eagles will play at Glenvar on Tuesday.

BLUE RIDGE DISTRICT: Salem bashed Rockbridge County 14-2 in a semifinal as Nicki Long struck out 13 and gave up only two hits.

Elizabeth Croy, Dee Holliday and Erika Lokey each had three hits and Beth Woodard stole four bases for the Spartans (13-6), who face Lord Botetourt in a semifinal at 11 a.m. today at the Moyer Complex.

In the other semifinal, Alleghany will play regular-season champion William Byrd at 11 a.m. The championship game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Tennis

REGION C: In the girls' finals at Wytheville on Tuesday, Grayson County defeated Lebanon 6-3 to advance to the Group A tournament on May 31 at Hampden-Sydney. In the singles championship match, Parry McCluer's Melanie Wexel defeated Lebanon's Misti Puckett 6-3, 6-3. Grayson County's Jennifer Reedy and Megan Reedy took the doubles title over Floyd County's Laura Harmon and Emily Edwards 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
