GIUDICE, POOL LEAD AVALANCHE

John Giudice went 5-for-5 and Matt Pool held Lynchburg to one run in eight innings as the Salem Avalanche knocked off the Hillcats 7-1 on Wednesday night in the Carolina League to record its fourth consecutive victory.

Giudice knocked in four runs and became the first Avalanche player to have five hits - all singles - in one game. Pool (4-3) gave up four hits while walking none and striking out five. Pool made only one mistake, giving up a fourth-inning home run to Mike Daniel.

Salem (25-22) put two runs on the board in the first inning. Chris Sexton led off with a walk, stole second and scored two outs later on Brian Culp's double. Culp came around on Giudice's single to give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead.

Salem scored two more in the third inning against Lynchburg (22-24). Vincente Garcia came home on a double by Forry Wells to give Salem a 3-0 lead. Garcia scored on another Giudice single with two out as the Avalanche took a 4-0 lead. Six of Salem's seven runs were scored with two out.

Wells and Culp each finished 3-for-5.
