AVALANCHE WIN STREAK REACHES 5

SALEM LOSES a 3-0 lead, but gets a 10th-inning double by Keith Grunewald to beat Lynchburg 4-3.

Keith Grunewald's double with no outs in the top of the 10th inning scored Randy Snyder to send the Salem Avalanche past the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-3 Thursday afternoon. The Carolina League victory was the Avalanche's fifth in a row.

Salem (26-22) has won four straight against the Hillcats and is 6-1 against Lynchburg this season.

Snyder drew a walk from Lynchburg closer Rafael Chaves to lead off the 10th inning, then scored on Grunewald's double to left-center field. Lynchburg got a leadoff single from Charles Peterson in the bottom of the 10th, but Matt Aminoff (1-0) retired the next three batters. Aminoff pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of two-hit relief. Chaves (0-1) was the loser, yielding one run, one hit and a walk while striking out one in two innings.

Lynchburg (22-25) had rallied from a 3-0 deficit and tied the score in the eighth inning on Rob Leary's solo home run to right field off Scott LaRock. Aminoff then got out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the ninth when Sergio Mendez popped out to shallow right and Roman Rodriguez grounded into a double play.

The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Forry Wells singled to center, John Giudice singled to right to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, and Edgard Velasquez grounded into a double play to score Wells.

Salem added two runs in the sixth. Giudice, who was 2-for-4 and is 10-for-17 in his past four games, doubled home Chris Sexton and Wells with two outs. Giudice, who was 5-for-5 Wednesday night, has driven in six runs in the past two games.

Lynchburg cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh inning of Salem starter Doug Walls, who allowed five hits and two runs in 62/3 innings while striking out five.
