STALEY NAMED TO USA TEAM

Former University of Virginia star Dawn Staley was one of 11 women selected to the 1995-96 USA Basketball Women's National Team.

Staley, who attended UVa from 1988-92, set NCAA records for most steals in a career (454) and was the only player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to accumulate more than 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, 700 assists and 400 steals.

Since graduating, Staley has played professionally in Europe and in 1994 led the U.S. National Team to a gold medal at the Goodwill Games where she was named MVP. She also was chosen USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year in 1994.

The national team will travel to Europe for a series of scrimmages against European national teams Sunday through June 6.

In other sports in the region:

Ferrum's R.J. Weaver and Washington and Lee's Tommy Dudley have been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America 1995 All-District Team.

Weaver, who averaged 80 strokes this season, won the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championships and finished 54th at 239, nine strokes from All-America status at the NCAA Division III tournament.

Bill Deck fired a 69 to lead Botetourt Country Club past Clifton Forge Country Club at the Senior Inner Club Golf Tournament held at Botetourt Country Club in Daleville. Deck shot a 36 on the front nine and a 33 on the back nine. He finished the round with four birdies and two bogey.

At the Southern Conference's spring meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the league's athletic directors have agreed to keep the baseball tournament in Charleston, S.C., through the 1998 season. The city of Charleston has hosted the conference's tourney since 1990 and the current agreement between the league and the city had one more year remaining before the conference decided to extend it.

Roanoke Express radio broadcaster Tim Woodburn announced this week that registration for the city's roller hockey league has been moved to the Star City Roller Skating Center on Hershberger Road at 6 p.m. Saturday. Registration is $45 and insurance will be $10.
