Little Dukes make National AAU
PULASKI - A fund-raising effort is underway to send 10 Pulaski County basketball players to the National AAU tournament for girls up to age 12.
It is the second time in three years that the Dublin Dukes 12-and-under team has qualified for the nationals. Only three teams among the 38 in Virginia who tried to qualify made it.
The team members are Trish Allison, Jamill Boysaw, Heather Burnette, Tiffany Conner, Ashley Graham, Jennifer Hamblin, Micah Hamblin, Lindsey Reed, Jessica Turpin and Shana Wenrich. They are coached by Buddy Farris.
Katie Reed and John Wenrich, in charge of the fund-raising committee, say it will take more than $12,000 to take the team to Oklahoma City, Okla., along with chaperones for the championships July 7-15.
The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors has referred a donation request by Wenrich to its Recreation Committee and will decide whether to make a contribution at its June 26 meeting.
Tax-deductible donations can be made to Lady Duke AAU Basketball and sent to 44 Douglas Ave., Dublin, Va. 24084. Further information is available by calling (703) 674-4663 or (703) 674-0183.
