OSCAR WINNER PATRICIA NEAL VISITS BARTER

Patricia Neal, who acted at Barter Theatre before moving on to a successful film career, returns to Abingdon June 4 for a fund-raising event to establish a scholarship for Barter interns.

Neal will be joined at a tea from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the gardens of the Martha Washington Inn by Elizabeth Wilson, another Barter actress who has distinguished herself in theater, film and television; Martha Sundquist, wife of the governor of Tennessee, and Mary Wampler, representing the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Tickets for the gathering, called "The Day of the Woman," are $45 and must be purchased by Tuesday. Proceeds will go into an endowment account for an annual scholarship allowing a young actor or actress to train at Barter.

Neal, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., was a Barter apprentice in 1942. Four years later, she received a Tony Award for her role in "Another Part of the Forest."

She was quickly signed by Warner Brothers and made 13 movies in four years, including "John Loves Mary," "The Hasty Heart," "The Fountainhead" and "Operation Pacific." She won an Academy Award for her performance in "Hud" and a nomination for "The Subject Was Roses."

Her television credits include "The Homecoming," "The Lou Gehrig Story" and "All Quiet on the Western Front," all of which garnered Emmy nominations.

Wilson was also an apprentice in 1942. She made her Broadway debut in "Picnic" and appeared in more than 30 Broadway and off-Broadway plays. Her film credits include "The Graduate," "Catch 22,'' "Nine to Five," "Regarding Henry," "The Addams Family," "Quiz Show" and "Nobody's Fool," plus TV roles in the series "East Side, West Side" and miniseries such as "Queen" and "Scarlett."
