BATH COUNTY RALLIES TO WIN TITLE

Dennis Loan singled home pinch-runner Adam Grist with the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Bath County to a 7-6 victory over Glenvar in the championship game of the Pioneer District baseball tournament Friday.

Glenvar took a 6-5 lead with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh on consecutive hits from Eric East, Andy Shelor, Jason Darnell and Matt Atkinson. Bath's David Buzzard tied the score with an RBI single.

Bath (16-3-1) hosts Floyd County in a Region C game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Glenvar travels to Grayson County for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday.

In other high school baseball:

MOUNTAIN EMPIRE DISTRICT: Chad Shaffner struck out 10 batters and Grayson County used a 14-hit attack to pound Bland 15-1 in a five-inning game to win the Mountain Empire District tournament at Pulaski's Calfee Park.

Brian McDonnell, Kevin Anderson, Chip Pack, Wes Selfe and Jason Byrd had two hits for Grayson County (19-1), which hosts Glenvar in a Region C game Tuesday at 7 p.m. Bland (11-6) travels to Lebanon on Tuesday for its regional game.

Soccer

REGION III: Michael Berry had two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Mike Creasy made nine saves as William Byrd beat Salem 4-1 in the Region III championship. Joe Cockfield, Brian Humphreys and Chris Sowers scored goals for the Terriers. Brian Jones scored the Spartans' goal.

Softball

PIONEER DISTRICT: Glenvar pitcher Amy Layman gave up one earned run, struck out 18 batters and hit a home run in the Highlanders' semifinal and championship wins at Green Run Park.

Niki Turner went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI as Glenvar downed James River 14-1 to win the district championship. Layman homered as Glenvar beat Bath County 4-1 in the semifinal. James River scored three runs in the sixth inning as it battled back from a 7-2 deficit to defeat Parry McCluer 11-8 in the other semifinal.

Glenvar will face Auburn, the Three Rivers District runner-up, Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem. James River, which receives a bye because the Mountain Empire District doesn't have a second-place team, will play the winner of the Floyd County-John Battle game on Thursday.
