AVALANCHE SURVIVES LATE CANNON BLAST FOR 4-3 WIN

Jamey Wright pitched eight solid innings Friday and the Salem Avalanche survived another shaky outing by its bullpen to win its sixth straight Carolina League game, 4-3 over the Prince William Cannons.

Wright (6-3) allowed one unearned run, five hits and one walk in 7 2/3 innings while striking out five to earning his fifth straight win.

Salem (27-22) led 4-0 after scoring three runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Mark Wells and Randy Snyder and a Prince William error.

Prince William (25-22) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth and added two in the bottom of the ninth off Mark Voisard. Jeff Abbott walked and scored when Juan Thomas hit a two-run homer over the center-field fence to cut the lead to 4-3. Reliever Matt Aminoff retired Paul Gonzalez and Robert Machado on warning-track fly balls to left to pick up his team-leading fourth save.
