GROUP INTENDS LAND AS REFUGE FOR WATERFOWL

An environmental group has purchased 1,100 acres along the Rappahannock River in Richmond County and turned it over to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in a major step to establishing a waterfowl refuge.

The Washington, D.C.-based Trust for Public Land used a $1.7 million federal grant to purchase the land. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which now holds title to the land, is considering donating it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for federal refuge purposes.

It is the second parcel along the river to come into the hands of environmental groups for eventual use as a refuge. In December, a Westmoreland County man gave 729 acres of old-growth riverfront forest to the Nature Conservancy.

The Fish and Wildlife Service wants to create a chain of refuges totaling up to 20,000 acres along 30 or 40 miles of the river.
