The number seven was unlucky for the Salem Avalanche.
Prince William's Tom Fordham and Michael Call combined on a three-hitter as the Cannons downed Salem 7-1 in Carolina League action on Saturday night, snapping Salem's six-game winning streak.
Fordham (8-0) kept his record perfect on the season by going six innings and giving up one run on three hits while walking three and striking out nine. Fordham's only mistake came in the fourth inning when he gave up a solo homer to Salem's Nate Holdren which turned out to be the Avalanche's last hit of the game. Call threw three innings of hitless relief.
Prince William (26-22) scored two runs off Salem starter Keith Barnes in the second inning. Harold Williams doubled to left-center with one out and Magglio Ordonez walked. Dan Fraraccio then doubled down the right field line to score both Williams and Ordonez and give the Cannons a 2-0 lead.
After Holdren's blast cut the lead to 2-1, Prince William put up two unearned runs in the fourth. Williams started things by hitting a grounder to first baseman Holdren, who picked it up and threw to Barnes covering first, but Barnes dropped the ball. The next batter, Ordonez walked, and Barnes threw the ball past Holdren while trying to pick off Ordonez, allowing Williams to score and Ordonez to go to third. Ordonez scored one out later when Keith Grunewald threw wildly past Holdren on a ground ball to give Prince William a 4-1 lead.
Prince William added a run in the fifth on a Robert Machado RBI single that plated Sandy McKinnon for the fifth run, and the Cannons added two more in the seventh off Salem reliever Curt Conley. Conley, who was making his first appearance in 10 days, walked Frank Menechino and Jeff Abbott to start the inning and then gave up an RBI single by Machado that scored Menechino and sent Abbott to third. Abbott then scored on a wild pitch by Bill Bliss, who came on in relief of Conley.
Barnes (3-2), took the loss for Salem (27-23) - his first in his past six starts - going four innings and giving up five runs and seven hits.
