HARDESTY, Bernard O. Sr., 82, of Bedford, and formerly of Annapolis, Md., died Friday, May 26, 1995 at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Galesville, Md. on September 20, 1912, a son of the late Thomas A. Hardesty and Christine Hoff Hardesty. He graduated from Tracys High School and attended the Towson Norman School (State Teachers College). After attending Eckels College in Philadelphia, Pa., he came home to assist his father, Thomas A. Hardesty, who was an undertaker in Galesville, Md. His father, Thomas, had originally sold farm equipment and worked as a blacksmith, but began the funeral home in 1911, originally as an adjunct to these other vocations. His father sent him to Hyattsville, Md. to work as an apprentice for W.W. Chambers Sr., where he lived above the garage of the Chambers Funeral Home and performed piecework during the depression era. His parents drove him to Hyattsville in a horse and buggy, giving him homemade bread and preserves and a five dollar bill that he put down on a dark blue suit. He learned to embalm, and did odd jobs and chores as required, until finally receiving a Maryland and Washington, D.C. Funeral Director's and Embalmer's license. Returning to Galesville, he worked with his father in what was then the T.A. Hardesty and Son Funeral Home, Galesville, Md. An addition was built onto the blacksmith shop to provide visiting rooms, offices, and embalming facilities. He married the late Mary Elizabeth (""Betty"") Kramer on August 22, 1936. In the early 1950's a new building was constructed in Galesville to house the funeral home, and Thomas passed away not long after, leaving the business to Bernard, who operated it with his wife. With the purchase of Hopping Funeral Homes, the business expanded to include three separate locations in Annapolis, Galesville, and Gambrills. He also established Hardesty Memorials, a tombstone and monument company. He was active in the Annapolis Elks Lodge #622, and was a Past Exalted Ruler. He was a charter member and the first president of the South Anne Arundel County Lions Club. He and his close friend, the late Charles Woodfield, co-coached the Galesville Pony League baseball team for many years. He was a avid hunter and fisherman, and until health problems slowed him down, he and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the country in their retirement. After Betty's death in June of 1990, he moved to the Elks National Home in Bedford, eventually marrying Leona Wharam McGhee. He is survived by three sons, Thomas A. Hardesty Sr., Mayo, Md., Bernard O. (""Bo"") Hardesty Jr., Grasonville, Md., Joseph J. (""Jerry"") Hardesty, Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Martha L. Hardesty, Annapolis; a fourth son, Michael O.
