ROANOKE HIGH JUMPER ALL-AMERICA

Courtney Fitch of Roanoke College tied for sixth place in the high jump Saturday at the Division III national track and field meet in Northfield, Minn.

Fitch cleared 6 feet, 91/4 inches to earn All-America status. He is a sophomore from Princeton, N.J.

In other sports news in the region:

Harrell Parker Jr. and Bobby O'Brien each shot a 71 to tie for first place at the Bedford Country Club men's invitational in Bedford.

John Nichols, a nine-time winner, is one stroke back at 72. Jay Brammer, Mike Grant, Tom Cayton and Richard Creasy are tied for third at 73.

Don Foster and Dan Shepherd of Roanoke are tied for fifth place at 75.

The tournament concludes today at 2 p.m.

Saturday's Budweiser 200 at the New River Valley Speedway was canceled because of rain. A makeup date has not been set.

Saturday's racing at Franklin County Speedway was canceled because of rain. Racing will resume at 6 p.m. Monday with gates opening at 2 p.m.
