CEO'S SURGERY GIVES GE CASE OF SUCCESSION JITTERS

For 14 years, John F. Welch, chairman of General Electric Co., has run one of the biggest and most profitable companies in the world. But earlier this month, after a company jet flew him to Boston to undergo heart surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, it became palpably clear that the Welch era can't go on forever.

Surprisingly, though, in a company admired for superb management, there is no clear successor to Welch, leaving open the possibility that the giant conglomerate with sprawling world-wide operations could be left scrambling to choose a new leader.
