CARROLL CO. LOSES 11-6 IN SOFTBALL

Virginia High scored five runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning Saturday to slip past Carroll County 11-6 in the semifinals of the Region IV softball tournament at Richlands.

Katie Dane led off the inning with a walk and Amy Smith singled to put two on with no outs. Two outs later, Erica Ford singled home Dane and Smith to give Virginia High a 8-6 lead. After Vicki Tubiold walked, Christy Blevins singled to score Ford and give Virginia High a three-run lead. Tubiold and Blevins scored the last two runs of the inning on an error to give Virginia High, which will meet Richlands for the Region IV title, an 11-6 lead.

Carroll County (8-10) was led by Sarah Puckett, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a score-tying RBI in the bottom of the seventh. Leona Edwards also went 2-for-4 and Vickie Haynes was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Soccer

REGION IV: In Blacksburg, Mark Decker and Steve Cherry had goals a minute apart in the first half to lead the Indians to the region championship with a 3-0 victory over Christiansburg.

Kurt Williams had the other goal for Blacksburg (16-0-1), which plays host to Region III runner-up Salem on Tuesday in the state quarterfinals.

Christiansburg (11-8) travels to Vinton to face Region III champion William Byrd, also on Tuesday.
