WILD START FINISHES AVALANCHE

Doug Million apparently has to walk before he can run in his return to the Salem Avalanche pitching staff.

Million, just off the disabled list with a sore pitching (left) shoulder, walked six batters in just 1 2/3 innings as the Prince William Cannons held off Salem 7-4 on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the Carolina League. Million was limited to just 50 pitches by the coaching staff.

Million, 0-2 with both losses to Prince William, walked one in a scoreless first inning but couldn't find the strike zone in the second. Prince William's Harold Williams walked to lead off the inning and Robert Machado followed with a single to center - the only hit off Million. After getting one out, Million walked Magglio Ordonez, Dan Fraraccio and Will Polidor in succession to force in two runs. Million struck out Sandy McKinnon, but walked Frank Menechino to force in Ordonez. He was relieved by Mike Saipe, who was greeted by Jeff Abbott's two-run single that gave the Cannons a 5-0 lead.

Salem (27-24) scored twice off Prince William starter Jason Pierson with two outs in the third inning when Chris Sexton singled, Keith Grunewald walked and Forry Wells tripled. The Avalanche cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mark Wells, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Prince William (27-22) scored two insurance runs in the fifth. Ordonez led off with a homer to left off Saipe. Polidor reached on an error by Sexton one out later, and scored on McKinnon's double.

Salem finished the scoring on Grunewald's RBI single in the ninth.

The Avalanche begins a three-game series tonight at Southern Division-leading Kinston.

Pierson (2-1) went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five. Saipe pitched 61/3 relief innings, giving up one earned run on six hits.
