MAYHEW EARNS 3RD ALL-AMERICA

Ferrum pitcher Keith Mayhew became the Panthers' first three-time All-American when he was named to the NCAA Division III All-America first team.

Mayhew, a native of Appomattox, was 12-2 this season with a 2.05 ERA and 138 strikeouts. He was a second-team All-American in 1994 and a third-teamer in 1993.

Chad France, a senior outfielder for Ferrum, made this year's third team. France, a native of Rocky Mount, batted .416 with 42 RBI.

Senior shortstop Tim Jorgensen of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was named player of the year for the second straight year. Jorgensen had 113 RBI and a .486 batting average.

In other sports news in the region:

John Nichols shot a final round 72 for a two-day total of 144 to win the Bedford Country Club Men's Invitational.

Nichols edged Bobby O'Brien, who fired a two-round total of 145. Dan Shepherd and Don Foster of Roanoke finished with 154 and 157, respectively.

Other winners were Danny Holdren (first flight, 154), Bobby Layne (second flight, 160) and Donnie Turner (third flight, 172).
