WARNER EXHORTS GRADUATES

Sen. John Warner told 240 graduates of Mary Baldwin College to use their education to help others.

He did not mention the school's proposed role as a substitute to admitting women to Virginia Military Institute.

``Service to others is the rent we pay for living,'' said Warner at commencement exercises Sunday.

Warner, a 17-year Senate veteran and graduate of nearby Washington and Lee University, showered the women's college and its administrators with praise for its ``dynamic tradition of excellence'' and many nontraditional programs.

The Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership has been at the center of the Justice Department's battle to force VMI to accept female cadets.

The Justice Department on Friday appealed to the Supreme Court a January court ruling that the Mary Baldwin program is an acceptable alternative to admitting women to state-supported VMI.
