HALIFAX WHIPS EAGLES

Halifax County scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game and defeat Franklin County 8-1 in the first round of the Northwest Region softball tournament Monday in South Boston.

Halifax County, which used 300 pounds of cat litter and a truckload of sand just to get the field in shape after weekend rains, will host Gar-Field in a semifinal on Wednesday. The Comets, who trailed 1-0 early in the game, scored two runs in the fourth on Sarah Allen's two-run triple before scoring six runs in the sixth on two hits and four walks.

Lori Cranfill pitched a complete game for the Comets. Erin Conley went the distance for the Eagles.

Baseball

PIEDMONT DISTRICT: At Laurel Park, winning pitcher Brian Mays (5-1) struck out 11 and allowed only six hits as Fieldale-Collinsville beat Magna Vista 9-1 in the title game.

Logan Bryant was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and Mike Thompson was 2-for-4 for Fieldale-Collinsville.

Fieldale-Collinsville plays Thursday against the winner of the Salem-Brookville game in the Region III Tournament at William Byrd High School. Magna Vista plays today against Amherst at Byrd.

NORTHWEST REGION: Brooke Point scored five runs in the fifth inning to beat Franklin County 7-6 in the first round of the Northwest Region tournament at Stafford.

Franklin County (15-6) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on on David Webster's two-run homer off Rob Simms. Webster was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Brooke Point (11-9) tied the score at 2 in the third inning and then took the lead on Julio Mercado's three-run homer in the fifth.

Rob Simms picked up the win for Brooke Point (11-9), and Larry Bowles (7-3) took the loss for the Eagles (15-6).
