Because of their efforts, Cave Spring downed Stonewall Jackson of Manassas 3-1 Monday afternoon in the first round of the Group AAA Northwest Region baseball tournament at Knights Field.
The victory moves Cave Spring (12-9) into Wednesday's regional semifinals - and one win away from the state tournament. It will meet the winner of today's Gar-Field at Halifax contest.
Lyons broke a 1-1 tie when he singled to right field with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth inning. The hit scored Doug Kenney and Chad Smith.
``I was just trying to get it in the hole and get some runs in,'' Lyons said. ``I hit a fastball. I was thinking curveball but [losing pitcher Jody Kepler] threw me a fastball so I took it the other way.''
Caldwell (10-1) made those runs stand up, pitching his way out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning.
``I was just trying to keep them off balance,'' said Caldwell, who allowed only three hits. ``I let the defense play. They made some great plays that got me out of the [sixth] inning.''
It was deja vu for the Raiders (10-11).
``In the last two games, we've had runners in scoring position where a hit would have broken things open or put us back in the game but we haven't produced,'' coach Jerry Mobley said.
Kenney tripled and scored on a wild pitch to give Cave Spring a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Stonewall Jackson tied it in the third without a hit. Kristian Hawkins walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.
