MAN FACES ROBBERY CHARGES

A Roanoke man has been charged with robbing two convenience stores over the Memorial Day weekend, and authorities are seeking a second person believed to be involved.

Roanoke police gave the following account Tuesday:

About 11:15 p.m. Sunday, two men walked into the Uni-Mart on Salem Turnpike Northwest. No gun was displayed, although one of the men held his hand in a pocket as if he were armed as he threatened the clerk and demanded money.

The men fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

About two hours later, two men entered the Crown store on Peters Creek Road. While one man stood back with his hand tucked in the back of his pants, the other demanded money from the clerk.

No one was injured in either robbery.

Police arrested Bavette F. Goffigan, 21, of Cove Road Northwest and charged him with two counts of robbery.

In another weekend incident, a woman who told police she was soliciting sex on Melrose Avenue Northwest early Tuesday reported that she was raped and sodomized.

The 30-year-old woman told police she was "attempting to prostitute herself" in the 1700 block of Melrose about 3 a.m. when she was approached by a man she knew by first name, according to a police news release.

The woman told police she refused to have sex with the man, but agreed to drink a beer with him at his apartment. As she later tried to leave, the woman told police, the man grabbed her by the neck and choked her, then raped and sodomized her.

The woman was treated at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. There have been no arrests.
