HIGHLANDERS KNOCK OFF GRAYSON

Sparky Atkinson hit a two-run homer and Jacob Weddle pitched a complete-game eight-hitter to lead Glenvar to a 6-3 upset over Grayson County in a Region C tournament quarterfinal baseball game in Independence on Tuesday.

With two outs in the first inning, Jason Darnall walked, and Atkinson followed with a homer off Grayson County starter Wes Self (5-1). Jacob Weddle and Brendan Kassenbaum each singled before Joey Taylor hit a grounder to shortstop. The ball was thrown over the first baseman's head to allow Weddle to score. Self then overthrew third base trying to get Kassenbaum, allowing him and Taylor to score as Glenvar (13-7-2) took a 5-0 lead. Three of those runs were unearned.

Grayson County (20-2) managed to cut the lead to three on an RBI single by Chad Shaffner in the first and another RBI single by Shaffner in the third, but Weddle allowed one run the rest of the way. Shaffner, Timesland's leading hitter, went 4-for-4 with three singles, a double and two RBI.

Self went the distance for the Blue Devils, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out eight and walking six.

Glenvar will meet Floyd County in the regional semifinals on Thursday at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

In other Region C baseball tournament games:

Peter Bucklin's RBI single in the seventh scored Jeremiah Mistele, and Bath County left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning as Floyd County downed the Chargers 4-3 in a quarterfinal game in Hot Springs.

Bath County (16-4-1) scored one run in the seventh and had the bases loaded with Jon Rodgers at the plate. Rodgers hit a ball sharply to center field, and the Buffaloes' Dwayne Hale made a sliding catch to preserve the win.

Jason Pratt led Floyd County (17-4) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rodgers pitched well for the Chargers, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two. The Chargers could not take advantage of shaky Floyd pitching as the Buffaloes walked nine, but Bath County left 13 on base.

In Pearisburg, Brandon Jackson's single with two outs in the top of the fourth scored Chris Castle with what proved to be the winning run as Patrick Henry-Glade Spring downed Giles 3-2 in a quarterfinal game.

PH-Glade Spring (16-6) will play Lebanon in Thurday's regional semifinals at Calfee Park.

Bill Wilson went seven innings and gave up four hits while striking out eight to pick the win. Josh Stephens (7-3) went the distance for Giles, striking out 10.

Eric Reynolds' two-run single in the first inning gave PH-Glade Spring a 2-0 lead. The Rebels took a 3-0 lead before Giles (15-6) scored a run in the sixth on Matt Tawney's sacrifice fly and another run in the seventh on Jerod Dalton's RBI single.

At Lebanon, senior pitcher Dan Statzer (8-1) tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight as Lebanon blanked Bland.

Kevin Williams had a two-run double in the first inning as the Pioneers scored all five of their runs. Matt Lambert took the loss for the Rockets.

REGION III: Brandon Inge twirled a two-hitter and smacked a two-run homer, leading Brookville to a 5-0 win over Salem in the quarterfinals at William Byrd High School.

The Bees (17-2) will meet Piedmont District champion Fieldale-Collinsville in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at William Byrd.

Salem (15-6) loaded the bases with one out in the each of the final two innings, but Inge struck out back-to-back hitters to end both threats.

Inge also had a single and a double in his 3-for-3 night at the plate.

In the another quarterfinal at William Byrd, Mike Padgett went 2-for-3 with a single and solo homer to lead Amherst County past Magna Vista 5-1.

Amherst County (17-4) advances to the regional semifinals, where it will face William Byrd on Thursday at 5 p.m. Magna Vista finishes the season at (15-5).

REGION IV: Blacksburg used an eight-run fifth to break open a close game and down Virginia High 11-4 in a Region IV quarterfinal game at Blacksburg.

Mike Davis drove in two runs with a one-out double and Greg Shockley knocked in the final two runs of the rally with a two-out, two-RBI single. Justin Jones added an RBI single and Patrick Martin drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

Softball

REGION C: At Salem's Moyer Complex, Amy Layman pitched a no-hitter as Glenvar swamped Auburn 32-0 in a first-round game.

Layman just missed a perfect game, walking an Auburn hitter in the fifth inning. Layman had 11 strikeouts in the game, called after five inning due to the slaughter rule.

The Eagles finished 4-14. Glenvar (15-7) advances to meet Castlewood on Thursday at the Moyer Complex.

At Floyd County, the Buffaloes spotted John Battle a 6-0 lead and then scored nine unanswered runs to down the Trojans 9-6 for Floyd's first regional win.

The Buffaloes (20-0) advance to Thursday's regional semifinals against James River, which has lost twice to Floyd this season.

Floyd County was led by Julie Sowers, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Kim Sutphin, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including two in a six-run sixth inning. Kim Moran (6-0), who was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored, got the win in relief of Sowers.

REGION III: In Rustburg, Lord Botetourt's Jessica Thompson faced the minimum 21 hitters and threw a no-hitter Monday as the Cavaliers blanked Fieldale-Collinsville 3-0 in a first-round game.

In the other first-round game, Tunstall blanked Amherst County 6-0 and will play unbeaten William Byrd today at 5 p.m. in one semifinal. Lord Botetourt faces two-time defending Group AA state champion Rustburg in the other game at 7 p.m. with both winners qualifying for the state tournament.

Thompson struck out seven and walked two. Another batter reached on an error. However, Thompson picked off one runner, another was thrown out stealing and a double play eliminated the other.
