ASHLEY NAMED SID AT RADFORD

Radford University announced Tuesday that it has named Mike Ashley as the school's new sports information director.

Ashley, a native of Salem, succeeds Rick Rogers, who resigned from the post to become director of electronic communications for the university's Office Of Public Information and Relations.

Ashley, a 1983 Radford graduate, has served as associate SID for the Highlanders since 1987.

Rogers had served as the Radford SID since 1978.

In other sports news in the region:

East Carolina and UNC Wilmington have been accepted by the Big South Conference as associate members in softball and will begin conference play and be eligible for the conference tournament next season.

Virginia's Jimmy Flippen opens play in the 1995 NCAA Division I men's golf championships today in Columbus, Ohio.

Flippen, a native of Danville, qualified for the tournament as an individual, defeating Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp in a playoff in the East Regional.

The tournament begins today and concludes Saturday on Ohio State University's Scarlet course.

Pitcher Tara Midget of Hampton University was named the state's Division II-III women's softball player of the year by Virginia college sports information directors.

Hampton coach Tiny Laster was named coach of the year for leading his club to a 42-3 record.

Ferrum outfielder Julie Shifflett was named to the SID's first-team all-state team. Panthers pitcher Roben Sutphins received honorable-mention status.

Ferrum College sophomore Cynthia Rhinehart was named to the 1995 GTE Academic All-District College Division At-Large's third team. Rhinehart has scored six goals in two seasons for the Panthers' women's soccer team.

Washington and Lee women's soccer player Marina Jackson made the second team, while W&L cross country runner Amy Mears made the third team.

Virginia placed eight lacrosse players on the All-America team announced by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

Doug Knight, Michael Watson and David Jones all made second team. Third-team choices were Tim Whiteley, Greg Traynor and Tommy Smith. Tony Nugent and Joe Wilson made honorable mention.

Johns Hopkins and Syracuse also had eight choices on the team. Virginia also placed eight on the team in 1980. The Cavaliers lost 20-13 in the national semifinal this season to Syracuse.

The 17th Charley Turner Open tennis tournament will be held June 8-11 at the Salem Civic Center. Entry deadline is Thursday. Entry fees range from $10 for singles to $20 for doubles. For information, call the Salem Department of Parks and Recreation at (703) 375-3057.

William Fleming graduate Mike Reed will represent Liberty University in the NCAA Outdoor National Track Championships that begin today in Knoxville, Tenn. Reed, a senior co-MVP at Liberty, will compete in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing second at the IC4As with a qualifying time of 50.52 seconds.
