Hanger, who received 56 percent of the convention votes, will challenge Sen. Frank Nolen, D-Augusta County, in November's election.
Hanger said his close ties to the community and strong base of support will help him win.
The convention ended united, with Root pledging his support for Hanger, said convention chairman Roger Dean.
``I'll be pleased to win with even a 1 percent spread, but I think we can open it up even more,'' Hanger said.
Roger Dean, convention chairman, said he was very pleased with the ``possibly record-setting'' turnout of 834 delegates.
``That shows me there are 834 people out there who want Frank Nolen out of office,'' Dean said.
Dean said he expected the close race for the nomination.
``We had two excellent candidates, and the convention ended united,'' with Root pledging his support for Hanger, Dean said.
Hanger said he hopes to create a platform based on Congress' "Contract With America" that he will call a "Contract With Virginia." He said he would like it to include a basic prohibition of unfunded federal mandates.
