FEWER FIRMS PLAN SUMMER HIRES

One in four Roanoke-area employers plans to add workers during the July-September quarter, compared with about one in three for the same period a year ago, according to a survey released Tuesday.

Manpower Inc., a Milwaukee temporary employment company, said the area's best job opportunities this summer are in construction, wholesale and retail trade and public administration.

Overall, the survey said 23 percent of employers planned to hire workers, 10 percent planned to cut employment and the rest planned to keep their present staffs. At this time last year, 37 percent of employers had hiring plans, according to Manpower, which does not disclose how many employers it interviews.
