DEMOCRATS PREPARE TO PICK NOMINEE

Montgomery County Democrats pick their nominee to run for sheriff at Saturday's mass meeting.

The five candidates - Frank Akers, Joe Miles, Joe Morgan, Jerry Olinger and Tommy Whitt - all have deep roots in the New River Valley and years of law enforcement experience.

Four of the five candidates either work in, or previously worked for, the county Sheriff's Office.

Akers retired last November after 30 years in law enforcement. Miles worked for the Sheriff's Office from 1981 through 1991. Morgan and Whitt are lieutenants of Sheriff Ken Phipps, who is not seeking re-election.

Olinger, an investigator-sergeant, has worked for Virginia Tech police for 24 years and was captain of Blacksburg's rescue squad for 19 years.

The following profiles tell prospective voters a little more about the candidates' goals, philosophies and backgrounds.

Registration for Saturday's mass meeting begins at 8:15 a.m. at Christiansburg High School in the commons area. Doors close at 9 a.m.

Democrats also will choose candidates for commonwealth's attorney, where incumbent Phil Keith is being challenged by County Attorney Roy Thorpe; commissioner of revenue; and four Board of Supervisors seats. No Democrat has declared to run for treasurer, a post held by Republican Ellis Meredith for 24 years.

The party also will choose delegates for a June 8 convention to nominate state Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, to run for re-election this fall.
