ECHL MAKES CHANGE AT THE TOP

Commissioner Pat Kelly will receive a two-year contract extension and a dramatic reduction in responsibilities at the top of the East Coast Hockey League, a published report says.

Rick Adams, who has served as Kelly's assistant for one year, will be promoted to the new position of league president and chief executive officer this week, The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger Star reported. The newspaper cited unidentified sources as saying Kelly will retain many of his current duties, but that Adams will become the ECHL's chief administrator.

Former Virginia standout Tony Meola, the top U.S. goalkeeper since 1989, was dropped from the national soccer team for the U.S. Cup '95 games against Nigeria, Mexico and Colombia. Meola has started most big games for the Americans since the early part of qualifying for the 1990 World Cup. Former UVa players who made the roster were defender Jeff Agoos and midfielders John Harkes and Claudio Reyna.

Racing entrepreneur Kenny Bernstein said he will leave his NASCAR Winston Cup team - with a car driven by Steve Kinser - and sell the inventory after the 1995 season. After spending 300 days on the road for the past several seasons, Bernstein said he wanted to ``relax a little.''

Bernstein began his professional racing career in 1978 as owner of a drag racing team. With his sale of the NASCAR team, which has Steve Kinser as driver, he will devote his full attention to the dragster, which is co-sponsored by Quaker State.
