In the bottom of the tenth inning, Salem relief pitcher Matt Aminoff picked up a bunted ball with runners on first and second, but his throw to third flew past teammate Keith Grunewald. Einar Diaz trotted home with the winning run as Kinston beat Salem 4-3.
Aminoff came in for Mark Voisard in the eighth inning after the Avalanche watched a 3-0 lead evaporate. Voisard gave up a two-run home run to Bruce Aven after Greg Thomas led off with a single.
Aminoff came in and retired one batter before Patricio Claudio reached base on a throwing error by short stop Chris Sexton. Claudio went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third when Aminoff's pick-off throw was beyond the reach of first baseman Nate Holdren. Claudio then scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Aminoff (1-1) took the loss while Greg Williams (2-0) was the winner for Kinston (35-18). Jamey Wright pitched six innings for Salem, giving up no runs on four hits while walking five and striking out six batters.
The Avalanche (27-27) will return home for a four-game series with Prince William tonight.
